Best time to visit Rhine Falls: what changes through the year
The viewing platforms and the free basin at Schlössli Wörth are open all year, so the Rhine Falls can be seen in every month. What changes is the amount of water, the boat schedule and the events around the falls. Heavy flow in early summer gives you more spray and noise. Calmer months give you clearer views of the rocks.
This page works from official long term averages, not from a forecast. It also shows the dated status for this autumn, so you can see what is running right now. For prices and opening hours, see Rhine Falls tickets.

Water flow by month
Long term monthly averages from the federal water station at Neuhausen, period 1959 to 2025.
| Month | Average flow in m³/s | Month | Average flow in m³/s |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 257 | July | 536 |
| February | 255 | August | 459 |
| March | 264 | September | 398 |
| April | 315 | October | 335 |
| May | 433 | November | 288 |
| June | 559 | December | 275 |
June has the highest monthly average and February the lowest. The curve rises steadily from March to June and falls again from July. These are averages over many years, so they say nothing certain about next June. A dry spell can pull the flow well below the usual figure for the month.
That is the case right now: the station recorded 123 m³/s on 01.11.2026 at 05:20. This is a single reading from one morning, not a monthly figure. A low reading changes how the falls look, with more rock and less white water, but the falls keep running.
Rhine Falls weather
For a visit, the water matters more than the sky. Temperature and rainfall figures would add little, because the flow at the falls depends on the whole Rhine catchment and not on the weather over Neuhausen on one day. After a rainy spell upstream the river carries more water, after a dry spell less.
Boat service is generally planned to run in rain, but the schedule can change with conditions, so check before you travel. Dress for spray on the lower platforms and on the boats, and bring a waterproof layer in any month. To compare the ways to see the falls, read about the Rhine Falls boat tour and the platforms at the castle.
Boats in autumn 2026
The season plan dated 25.08.2026 shows daily boats until 01.11.2026. From 2 to 29 November 2026, limited boat service runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:00. Check the current timetable for later dates. From Monday to Friday there are charter trips on request. The operators' winter break runs from 24.12.2026 to 03.01.2027.
Rhine Falls in December
What you can expect in the cold months.
Platforms
The platforms and the free basin at Wörth are reachable all year, according to the operators. You can stand at the falls in December just as in August.
Boats and exhibitions
Boats and exhibitions keep their own hours. Charter trips run on request from Monday to Friday after 02.11.2026, and the operators close from 24.12.2026 to 03.01.2027. The Historama at the castle is closed for renovation until 27.11.2026.
Shop and low water
The castle shop in December is open from 10:00 to 16:00. The lower winter averages in the table are not a sign that the falls run dry. They simply carry less water than in June.
The floodlighting of the falls is switched off from 26.10.2026 to 27.11.2026, so evening visits in that period are without it. For a winter day by train, a day trip from Zurich that swaps the boat for a panoramic platform ticket from November to February is one option. The Zurich to Rhine Falls page compares the ways to get here.
Rhine Falls fireworks on 31 July
The Swiss national day show at the falls, with dates for 2026 and 2027.
The municipality cancelled the fireworks and the Nohlbuck festival on 31.07.2026 because of dry conditions. The bonfire planned for 01.08.2026 was cancelled as well. For 31.07.2027 the organisers announce fireworks at about 21:45, free of charge. That is an announcement and not a guarantee, so check again closer to the date.
The organisers publish safety rules for the evening. The Laufenwiese meadow is closed, private fireworks at the falls are banned, and the station platform must not be used as a viewing platform. When the crowd is large, access from the Industrieplatz via the Laufengasse and the lifts is closed, at the latest from 19:00. Arrive early by public transport and see how to get to Rhine Falls for the stations on both banks.
The background to the falls, from the ice age to the mills, is on the Rhine Falls history page.
