Rhine Falls hotels: choose the area first

The Rhine Falls sit between Neuhausen am Rheinfall in the canton of Schaffhausen and Laufen-Uhwiesen in the canton of Zurich. For Rhine Falls hotels, the useful question is not the name of a property but where you want to wake up. Each area below is tied to a real way of reaching the water, so your choice shapes your first and last hour of the day.

This page does not compare hotels and does not quote room prices. It sorts the area by how you get to the falls from there, with the facts that matter for planning: stations, buses, luggage, payment and access. If you are still working out the journey itself, read how to get to Rhine Falls first.

Where to stay near the Rhine Falls, area by area

Five bases and what each one gives you.

Neuhausen am Rheinfall

Neuhausen is the north bank. From here you reach the free basin at Schlössli Wörth and the departure point of the rock boat. The station Neuhausen Rheinfall is served by the S9. Choose this base if you want short ways to the water in the morning or evening. See our Neuhausen am Rheinfall page.

The Laufen side

The Laufen side is the south bank in the canton of Zurich, with the platforms of Schloss Laufen and its own station. It suits visitors who care most about the viewing platforms and the lift. Step-free routes exist at the castle, but not from the castle down to the basin and the boat landing.

Schaffhausen

Schaffhausen is the rail hub for the local connections. The S9 runs from here to Neuhausen Rheinfall, the S12 and S33 serve the castle station, and bus 1 goes to Neuhausen Zentrum, followed by about 10 minutes on foot. It also puts the old town and the Munot within reach, see the Schaffhausen page.

Stein am Rhein

Stein am Rhein works as a base if you want the St. Georgen Monastery museum and a quieter evening. It is reached by regional train from Schaffhausen. More on the Stein am Rhein page.

Zurich

Zurich has the direct S12 to the Schloss Laufen station. If you prefer a big city base and visit the falls as a day trip, the Zurich to Rhine Falls page compares tour and train.

Practical points before you book

Details that apply wherever you sleep.

Luggage: Schloss Laufen does not offer left luggage and refers visitors to the larger SBB stations with lockers. If your check-out comes before your train, ask your accommodation whether it can keep your bags. Locker sizes and prices vary, so look them up before you rely on them.

Payment: Entrance fees and fares for the falls are published in Swiss francs. Euro payment is mentioned only for certain parking machines and for the Untersee boats, so do not assume that every shop or café accepts it. Carry a card and some francs.

Access: At the castle, the Belvedere and the panoramic lift are suited to wheelchairs and prams, while the Känzeli and Fischetz viewpoints are reached by steps. The rock boat involves more than 100 steps and is not recommended if walking is hard. Dogs are not allowed on the rock boat. Rules for other boats are not covered here, so ask the operator.

Bicycles: Riding is prohibited on the castle grounds, and signed bicycle parking is provided. Parking rules at the castle give a price per hour. They are not an offer to sleep in a camper or a coach, so look for a proper site if you travel that way.

Seasonal notes with a date: the Historama is closed for renovation until 27 November 2026, and the falls are not lit from 26 October to 27 November 2026. The platforms stay open. If you want to see the Stein am Rhein museum, check its season dates before the visit, because the 2026 season ends on 1 November.

Rhine Falls hotels and stays: frequently asked questions

Which area suits a first visit to the Rhine Falls?

That depends on your plan. Neuhausen puts you on the north bank near the free basin, Schaffhausen is the rail hub for the local lines, and Zurich suits a day trip with the direct S12 to the castle station.

Can I leave my luggage at the castle?

No. The castle has no left luggage. Ask your accommodation to keep your bags or use lockers at a larger SBB station.

Do I pay in euros or francs?

Fees and fares for the falls are published in Swiss francs. Pay with a card or francs and do not count on euros in shops and cafés.

Can I sleep in my camper at the castle car park?

The tariff for coaches and motorhomes is a parking rate. It does not give permission to stay overnight.
