Stein am Rhein from the Rhine Falls
Stein am Rhein lies at the foot of Burg Hohenklingen on the Rhine and is linked with Schaffhausen and Kreuzlingen by the boat network of URh. It is a popular add-on to the falls: the guided coach tours from Zurich include a walk through the town, and several private tours combine the falls, Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein in one day.
This page explains the three things worth planning: the museum at St. Georgen Monastery, the castle Hohenklingen and the trip by boat or train from Schaffhausen. For the falls themselves read our tickets page and for the starting point of most trips Zurich to Rhine Falls.

Our picks: Stein am Rhein tours
Our take: the half-day coach trip combines the falls with a guided village walk. The private tour adds hotel pickup, and the one-hour walk is for a short stop in town only.

Rhine Falls and Stein am Rhein
Two stops, one rail line.
The two places can be combined by train. The monastery museum confirms regional trains from Schaffhausen and from Winterthur, so the usual route leads from the falls to Schaffhausen and from there to Stein am Rhein. How long the whole day takes depends on the connections and on how long you stay, so do not plan it down to the minute.
Among the tours, the coach tour with Stein am Rhein includes the entry to the falls, the entry to Laufen Castle and a guided walk through the town, while the boat at the falls is an optional extra in the season. A private tour with a local guide includes pick-up and drop-off at your hotel, with the tickets for the boat and the castle paid separately. Another private tour also includes Zurich city highlights, Schaffhausen and the Munot fortress.
St. Georgen Monastery museum
The museum belongs to the Swiss Federal Office of Culture. Its 2026 season ran from 3 April to 1 November 2026, Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, and the museum is not regularly open on Monday. Dates for later years are not part of this page, so check the season dates before your visit, especially if you travel after 1 November.
Admission for adults is CHF 7, for groups from 10 people CHF 5 per person, and children and young people up to 16 years go in free. The Swiss Museum Pass is valid. From the station it is about 10 minutes on foot to the monastery, from the boat landing about 5 minutes. Guided tours for groups are arranged on request.
Burg Hohenklingen
The castle above the town.
Burg Hohenklingen stands above Stein am Rhein and is the landmark you see from the river and from the town. It is linked as a destination by the boat operator. Check the opening hours and any entry fees with the castle itself before you go.
Boat from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein
A timetable example and a few dates for 2026.
URh publishes an example from the Summer 2026 timetable: from Schaffhausen at 09:10 to Stein am Rhein at 11:15, and back at 16:57 arriving at 18:15. That works out at 2 hours 5 minutes upstream and 1 hour 18 minutes downstream. A day ticket for the return trip is quoted at CHF 49.50 in the same example. Treat this as an example from the season, not as a current timetable.
The scheduled boat service of 2026 ended on 18 October. A separate autumn offer on the Untersee runs from Friday to Sunday until 8 November 2026, but it does not mean there is a through connection on the river. Low water also matters: a special timetable valid from 3 April 2026 shows an interruption between Stein am Rhein and Diessenhofen. Do not count on a boat in November, and check the current operation with the operator.
If you stay overnight in the area, see our page on where to stay for the choice of places. The old town of Schaffhausen is described on the Schaffhausen page.
